This course is designed for workers involved in excavation activities across construction sites, roads, parks, and industrial settings. CAT & Genny Training equips delegates with the knowledge and practical skills to locate underground utilities safely using cable avoidance tools and signal generators, in line with HSE guidance (HSG47).

What Will I Learn?

Upon completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand key health and safety regulations and relevant Codes of Practice

  • Confidently operate a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny)

  • Identify various types of underground services and how to detect them

  • Recognise services not traceable with standard equipment

  • Interpret utility drawings and service plans

  • Conduct accurate site surveys and sketches

  • Apply safe digging techniques and understand the use of permit systems

Training combines both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed through practical exercises and instructor observation. The course includes classroom instruction followed by a hands-on site simulation, where delegates will perform a survey and sketch underground services.

Certification

Successful participants will receive a certificate confirming their competency in locating and identifying underground utilities using CAT and Genny tools.
